What is a Horse Track System?

What is the "track"?

A track system is often considered a "Paddock Paradise" which is a way of keeping horses that was created by Jaime Jackson, who spent years of researching into horse's natural environments and studying how they live in the wild. Rather then being turned out into paddocks,  a track is fenced along the perimeter of the paddock or pasture  allowing for restricted grazing and increased movement.

The Track Surface

The horses navigate different surfaces which help barefoot horses build up strength in their hooves and to cope with different type of footings. Horses are encourage to forage as they would naturally and are fed a diet of meadow hay situated at various feeding stations around the track-- again creating the horses to move and not stand around a traditional bale of hay with limited movement.

Obstacles

Obstacles mimic natural borders are also placed around either track, such as rocks, logs to go over, scratching posts, mounds. Points of interest are created, such as areas of wood chip, or sand pits for rolling/sleeping, and salt licks and other foraging opportunities. Foraging and increased movement also ensure that horses are stimulated and free from the boredom that they may experience in a traditional barn.

Why is it beneficial?

  • Increases movement while restricting grass intake
  • Mimics the horses's natural environment
  • Allows horses to express their natural behavior
  • Discourages vices and unwanted behavior
  • Creates a stimulating environment for the horse
  • Has many health benefits including a lower risk of stomach ulcers and laminitis
